Time-Lapse Tuesday: Gyeongbokgung Palace in South Korea

Gyeongbokgung Palace was built in 1394 by King Taejo, first ruler and founder of the Joseon dynasty. Expanded over the years, the palace grew to contain 7,700 rooms in 500 buildings over 40 hectares.

During the Imjin War, the palace was destroyed by fire, then abandoned for two centuries. Although restored under King Gojong, it was torn to the ground by Japanese forces during their occupation of Korea.

Reconstruction efforts began again in 1989. Hundreds of buildings have now been restored to their original glory, with another 20 years of projects planned.
