Among the different regions of Himalayas, the Everest Base Camp (EBC) trek is an awe-inducing experience every time. One would think that in my 15+ years of trekking in this majestic place there’d be nothing for me to look forward to in my next visit, but Everest never ceases to surprise me. Not only does the trek take you to the base of the world’s tallest mountain, but the whole journey is filled with mesmerizing views, adventurous hills, local hospitality, rich Sherpa culture, delicious food, smiling porters, wildlife, and more. It’s truly a unique trekking experience in the higher Himalayas.

It’s an overwhelming experience to be a part of EBC trekking year-round. Over all these years, I have seen the highs and lows of this trek. I consider my successful trekking to EBC a tremendous learning experience as every trek has taught me a unique lesson. It’s safe to say that the EBC trek is for everyone who loves adventures but you need to keep some important tips in mind before and during the trek.

1.EBC does have some physical challenges but it is not the hardest trek in the Himalayas. You need to be mentally prepared that you are doing the glorious trek to the EBC, situated at an altitude of 5364m. Make sure you are well-equipped and organized for this trek.

2.Be comfortable with your gear, especially your trekking shoes, day pack, and trekking poles. Start hiking (or walking) at least two weeks earlier than the date of your actual trek. It's not compulsory, but this training will help you enjoy your trek even more.

3.Make sure you have the right gear for the right season. You can trek to EBC year-round, but every season is different. Before you book your trip, make sure you do some research on the weather first.

4.Don’t trek alone. In general, this trek is safe and there are enough tea-houses along the trail, but it’s best to trek with some travel companions or with a guide and porters. Without proper planning, it might be too late to organize help due to the adverse conditions in the Himalayas. It’s always safer to trek with the experts of these trails.

5.Remember to give yourself time to acclimatize. The most difficult part of this trek is the altitude, which you can’t always train for at home. Your body needs to properly acclimate before you go to higher altitudes.

6.The high altitude causes many people to lose their appetite. Carry some of your favourite snacks, in case you need them.

7.You can buy bottled water in the Everest region, but it’s better to use purification pills since you need to hydrate yourself constantly.

8.If you are unable to make it to Base Camp, it’s safe to stay and eat at a tea-house. Your CEO can gain access to the kitchen where they can inspect how food is being prepared to ensure hygiene and freshness.

9.Don’t carry too much or over-pack for the whole trek. Think about what you will need for a particular day and pack accordingly. Don’t forget your first aid kit!

10.The only access to the Everest region is through Lukla. With good weather, there are regular flights from Kathmandu, but with poor weather, flights are grounded. Since weather conditions can change unexpectedly, expect short or long delays depending on the conditions.

11.Don’t forget to tip your supporting local team. Tipping might not be in your culture, but this money helps to support them.
